Dee Conway studied ballet as a child in Melbourne with the Borovansky Academy. Later on in London while pursuing a career in science, she studied various other dance styles including Martha Graham technique at The Place, and went on to combine her understanding of dance with an enduring interest in photography.
She has been the regular ballet and dance photographer for The Times for many years. Commissions include Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Sadlers Wells, Adventures in Motion Pictures, Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court Theatre, City of London Festival. She has exhibited at the Photographer's Gallery in London, Sadlers Wells, Royal Festival Hall, Arnolfini Gallery Bristol and Arts Centre de Singel, Antwerp Belgium.
The library comprises her personal archive dating from around 1982 to the present. The photographs are primarily stage pictures from British companies or visitors from abroad performing in London or the regions of England. Most major British ballet and contemporary companies are represented plus the Kirov, Bolshoi and dance companies from America, Canada, Europe and Australia.
Folk and national dance is well represented including flamenco, tango, dance from Africa, China, Georgia, India (Kathak, Odissi, Kathakali, Baratnatyam & Choou), Thailand and Japan (Noh, Bhuto). Plus Tap Dogs, the Trocks, Joaquin Cortes and others.
